Remote control car buying guide: which RC car for which age
In short
For ages 2–4, pick a simple RC car with a steering-wheel remote. From 3 to 10, stunt cars and glow tracks are the favourites. From 6, try wall-climbing cars, construction trucks or a building-block RC set, and for 8 and up a big 1:16 car or quad bike. Rechargeable USB cars save a lot on batteries.
A remote control car is one of the most-asked-for toys, but there is a big difference between a car for a three year old and one for a ten year old. Here is how to choose.
By age
Ages 2–4: simple and sturdy
Look for a car with big buttons or a steering-wheel remote, slow speeds and a soft, rounded body.
- JakMean cartoon RC car with steering-wheel control, made for toddlers (about Rs 5,750).
Ages 3–10: stunt cars and glow tracks
- 360° stunt cars with LED lights that flip and spin (about Rs 6,990). Some have gesture control or a programming mode.
- Glow-in-the-dark RC track sets: small cars race along a track that lights up (about Rs 6,590–9,390).
Ages 6 and up: special tricks
- Wall-climbing cars and tanks that stick to smooth walls and glass with suction (about Rs 5,950–7,190).
- RC construction vehicles: dump truck, loader and USB-rechargeable bulldozer (about Rs 4,490–9,650).
- Pingao RC jeep building set, 410 pieces: build it, then drive it (about Rs 11,750).
- Lunar Pioneer 8-wheel space rover, 2.4GHz, 6+ (about Rs 11,790).
- Remote control robot (about Rs 14,990).
Ages 8 and up: big and fast
- 1:16 scale drift car, 2.4GHz, up to 15 km/h (about Rs 17,550).
- 1:16 RC stunt quad bike with oversized tyres (about Rs 20,450).
Words on the box, explained
| On the box | What it means |
|---|---|
| 2.4GHz | The remote works further away, and several cars can race together without mixing up signals. |
| Scale 1:16, 1:64 | How much smaller than a real car. 1:16 is a big toy; 1:64 is pocket-sized. |
| USB rechargeable | Charge with a phone-style USB cable instead of buying batteries. |
| 360° rotation | The car can spin and flip, so it keeps going after a crash. |
| Infrared | The remote must point at the car, so it works best indoors in one room. |
Indoor or outdoor?
- Indoors: small stunt cars, wall climbers and track sets. Smooth floors are best.
- Outdoors: bigger cars with large tyres, such as the 1:16 drift car, quad bike and rover. Keep them away from water, sand and roads.
Battery tips
- Check what's needed. Many remotes still take AA batteries even when the car is rechargeable.
- Charge fully before the first run and unplug once it is charged.
- Take batteries out if the car will sit unused for a while.
