Baby dolls, fashion dolls or a doll house? Choosing a doll by age
In short
Baby dolls with feeding, bath or sound features suit 3 to 5 year olds who love to care for a baby. Fashion dolls, with clothes and careers, are a favourite from about 5. Doll houses and playsets give older children a whole world to play in. Most dolls in our shop say 3+ on the box.
"Which doll should I buy?" is one of the questions we hear most at our shop in Packages Mall. There are three quite different kinds of doll, and each suits a different stage. Here is a simple way to choose.
1. Baby dolls: for little carers (about 3 to 5)
Young children love to do what grown-ups do: feeding, bathing, putting to sleep. A baby doll with a few care items keeps that game going for a long time. Look for soft, easy-to-hold dolls and accessories that are big enough for small hands.

2. Fashion dolls: dressing up and stories (about 5 and up)
Fashion dolls are smaller and come with outfits, hair to style and often a job or story: doctor, scientist, princess. Children start to make up longer stories with them and swap clothes between dolls.

3. Doll houses and playsets: a whole world (about 4 to 9)
A doll house or playset gives the dolls somewhere to live, cook and shop, and turns a single doll into hours of play. Bigger houses are best for children who already own a few dolls.

Tips before you buy
- Check the age on the box. Most of our dolls say 3+, because accessories such as bottles, shoes and hair clips are small. For a child under 3, choose a soft doll with no small parts.
- Batteries: talking and singing dolls need batteries; check the product page and keep spares at home.
- Bath dolls are made for water; other dolls with electronics should stay dry.
