Toy Guides
Baby toys month by month: safe toys and gifts from 0 to 24 months
In short
0–3 months: mobiles and soft rattles to look at and hear. 3–6 months: rattles and teethers to grab. 6–12 months: musical toys, stacking and bath toys. 12–24 months: push-along toys, toy phones, shape sorters and first pretend play. Always check the age on the box.
Babies change fast, and so do the toys they enjoy. Here's what suits each stage, from the baby shelf at our shop. The box always shows a minimum age; follow it, especially for small parts.
0–3 months: look and listen
- Musical mobiles over the cot, with soft lights and melodies.
- Soft rattles with gentle sounds.
- High-contrast toys (black, white and red) that young eyes can follow.
3–6 months: grab and chew
- Rattles and teethers: soft, light and easy to hold, like the Winfun monkey rattle with a teether (about Rs 2,190).
- Rain-stick rattles (from about Rs 490).
- Play mats and gyms for tummy time.
6–12 months: press, bang and splash
- Musical toys with big buttons: ducks, cars and baby pianos (from about Rs 2,190).
- Stacking rings and cups.
- Bath toys that pour and float.
12–24 months: walk and pretend
- Walkers and push-along toys for first steps (activity walkers from about Rs 8,450). See walkers.
- Toy phones and cameras with lights and sounds (from about Rs 990).
- Shape sorters and simple puzzles.
- First instruments: xylophones, drums and keyboards. See musical toys.
Safety checklist
- Age on the box: "0+" or "6m+" means it's made for that age. "3+" means not for babies.
- Small parts: anything that fits through a toilet-roll tube is too small for under-3s.
- Batteries: the battery cover should close with a screw.
- Wash soft toys and teethers before first use and often after.
- Cords and strings on toys should be short; never tie toys across a cot within reach.
Gifts for a new baby
A musical mobile, a rattle-and-teether set or a baby gift set make a good newborn present. For a first birthday, a walker, a musical toy or a shape sorter. See 0–18 months and 18–36 months.
