For quick evenings: card games

Card games are cheap, small and fast: a round takes 15 minutes, so they're perfect after dinner or while travelling.

For big gatherings: Tambola

Tambola (housie) works for cousins, aunties and grandparents at the same time. Our set has 600 tickets and plastic number pieces.

For little children: Ludo and matching games

Magnetic Ludo keeps pieces in place and folds for travel. Shape and colour matching games and dominoes work from age 3.

For all ages: stacking and action games

Jenga, table basketball and smash-ball games need no reading, so everyone from 6 to 60 can join.

How to choose

• Count your players. Most board games are 2–4; card games and Tambola take more.
• Check the youngest player's age. The age on the box is the minimum.
• Think about time. Busy weeknights: 15-minute games. Holidays: longer board games.
