How to check your Hot Wheels are genuine: 7 things to look at
In short
Check the card (Hot Wheels and Mattel logos, collector number, printed back), then the car: the base should show the Hot Wheels name, Mattel, a year and where it was made. Paint and printing should be sharp and the wheels straight. Treasure Hunts have a flame-in-circle logo.
Hot Wheels is the most searched toy brand on our website, and the collectors who buy from us know their cars. If you're buying a gift or starting a collection, here are the simple checks collectors use. All the Hot Wheels in our shop are genuine Mattel cars.
On the card
1. The logos
The front of the card shows the red-and-yellow Hot Wheels flame logo and the Mattel name. Colours should be bright and the print sharp.
2. The collector number and series
Most mainline cars have a collector number (for example 125/250) and a series name with the car's number in that series (for example "HW: The '90s 1/10").
3. The back of the card
The back is fully printed: the car's name, other cars in the series, age and safety warnings, Mattel's address and a barcode.
On the car
4. The base
Turn the car over. The base is moulded with the Hot Wheels name, Mattel, a copyright year (the year the model was designed, not the year it was made), the model's name and the country it was made in, usually Malaysia or Thailand.
5. Paint and printing
The paint is even and the printed details (stripes, logos, lights) are crisp and lined up.
6. Wheels
The wheels sit straight and roll smoothly. Each series uses specific wheel designs, and premium cars have rubber tyres.
7. Weight and feel
The body is die-cast metal with a plastic base, so the car feels solid for its size.
How to spot a Treasure Hunt
- Treasure Hunt: a small grey flame-in-a-circle logo printed on the car and on the card behind the car.
- Super Treasure Hunt: shiny Spectraflame paint, rubber "Real Riders" tyres, a small "TH" printed on the car and a gold flame logo on the card.

Questions people ask
Do you keep Treasure Hunts?
They come randomly in Mattel's boxes, so we can't promise one. Ask us on WhatsApp what's on the shelf this week.
Should I open the card?
For play, yes. Collectors keep cars carded because a mint card adds value.
Which Hot Wheels for a 3-year-old?
Basic cars and simple tracks. Hot Wheels are marked 3+.
