Pokémon toys for kids: figures, cards and how to start collecting

Pikachu, Charmander and Squirtle are as popular with children in Pakistan as anywhere. Pokémon toys come in two main kinds, figures to play with and cards to collect, and they suit different ages.

Pokémon figures

• Figure multi-packs: 8 battle figures including Pikachu (about Rs 2,990).
• Pikachu sets with a Poké Ball launcher (about Rs 3,990).
• Mini figure sets: Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle and friends (about Rs 6,890).

Pokémon trading cards

Pokémon cards are collected, swapped with friends and used to play a card game. Children usually start around age 6, when they can read the cards.

• Collecting: children try to complete sets or find their favourite Pokémon, and shiny cards are the prize.
• Swapping: trading doubles with friends is half the fun.
• Playing: the card game teaches counting, reading and planning.

How to look after cards

• Sleeves: put favourite cards in plastic sleeves.
• Binders: a binder with card pages keeps a collection flat and easy to show.
• Keep dry and flat: no back pockets, no rubber bands.
